Working at the Stanwood/Camanoo food bank overall was not what I thought it was going to be. I have worked about 5 or 6 hours total so far and I feel like I am as big of help that I thought I was going to be. Going there I thought I was going to be able to work with the public and observe how things work at a food bank. I have seen a little how the food bank works but I do not know the majority of the information. It also does not help that in the small town there is not many people, so the food bank is not very busy. When I volunteer at the food bank I usually help in the back with sorting food and cleaning. I know I am helping someone because I make it a little easier on the other volunteers. The food bank provides a lot of food for those who can not afford it, because I volunteer there I feel I am helping people too, just not the way I thought I was going to. Because I have helped out with the other volunteers, I hope I am more help to someone.

As going to my sevice learning site at the stanwood/camano food bank I have learned that there are all types of people that go there and has shown how we help them. Three cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson has also shown many aspects of helping people and doing good for your community. Throughout my experience so far at the food bank it has opened my eyes, just like the experience Mortenson had in pakistan did for him.

At the food bank I usually prepare the food that will be handed out. I have seperated strawberries, the good from the bad, and baged them to be given to a family. Also I have measured sugar so that the family can get a good enough amount for a while. As I went to the food bank I expected to be able to help the people and not just handle the food. Through out volunteering there I have been able to see some people and the broad range the characteristics. With even sorting the strawberries and measuring sugar I feel good that i am helping out in some ways and will hopefully make other lives easier, like Mortenson had done for others.

Greg Mortenson too was able to help people and feel good while doing it. Both him and I have had set backs. Him with the bridge and me not actually interacting with the people. "There was much more meaningful gestures he could make in honor of his sister.” Greg says this at the beginning of the book when he did not make it to the top of the mountain. He knows he needs to honor his sister and by doing so he builds a school. Greg is trying to make a difference, like me, but is doing way more than some could imagine.

Both Mortenson and I have help others but in two very different ways. With him being half way acrocc the world helping and building a school and bridge, to me working at a near by food bank. Even though he has done more to help than I have, both end up making a difference in the world.

With my service learning i will be volunteering at the stanwood/camano island food bank. With volunteering at the food bank I will be able to see all different type of people. From what i have learned from other people in the class is that the range of people that go to the food banks differ by a lot. With the economy there is many more people on need and there fore more and more people need to ge to the food bank. I am excited to start so that I can get to know more about the food bank and what it offers.
